Jacksonville Historical Society lists 12 sites in danger of being erased -- Jacksonville.com

An interesting article dealing with something we can all agree on. Downtown Jacksonville has become a cesspool for drugs, crime, prostitution, etc. While there are many historic landmarks that need to be preserved if we ever hope to revitalize the downtown area!

Glee Kills Again — The Curse Lives on, While Stars do Not!

Disclaimer: No, I really do not believe Glee, or its creators, are out to kill. This is just a piece focusing on strange coincidence.

Fox’s hit series Glee is known by millions as the show that aims to bring about unity and equality, by giving outcasts a voice and showing that while we are all different we are all special. How does the show do this exactly? Through song. Each episode features 5-10 songs that relate to issues being dealt with by a specific character at the time.

I, myself, am among the millions of Glee fans [commonly referred to as Gleeks] in America who watch the show, collect the songs, and even sing them in the car on occasion. There has been some discussion about the show over the years relating to its quality. Discussions include a “lack of continuity”, “how the show ruins classic tunes”, “how gay the show is” (classy). Truthfully, I find the show to be enjoyable, with the occasional flaw, but let’s be honest, if it were not for shows like Glee how many of those older songs would ever see the light of day among today’s youth? NONE of them. If people do not like the Glee Cast versions of songs, at least they can use the Internet to look up the originals and learn to love them as previous generations did and continue to do so today… Now, on to the main topic of this post, the curse of Glee!

                                         —————

Anybody with access to a computer or a television/news channel in their home is bound to have heard the news of Robin Gibb’s recent death. Gibb was admitted to a hospital after going into a coma earlier this spring, his death came on 20 My 2012 following a long battle with cancer. Now this may just be coincidence, but it is also too coincidental to be just that. Here is a list of coincidences involving Glee.

2011

  • In the season 2 episode eerily titled Funeral Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) performs a song by Amy Winehouse, “Back to Black”, in front of Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff) and Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) in hopes of getting a solo at nationals. The episode first aired on 17 May 2011
  • A little over one month later, Amy Winehouse was found dead in her Camden Square residence at the age of 27 as a result of alcohol poisoning. Her Album Back to Black then became the UK’s best selling album of the 21st Century.

2012

  • The season 3 Valentines Day episode of Glee titled Heart featured Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) performing the hit “I Will Always Love You”. This song was originally performed by Dolly Parton but made famous by Whitney Houston, Mercedes sang the song to her then boyfriend Shane Tinsley (LaMarcus Tinker). This episode aired on 14 February 2012.
  • Three days prior to the airing of Heart, Whitney Houston was found dead in the Beverly Hilton suite 434 at the age of 48. Her death was a result of drug use and an accidental drowning. Glee then aired a memorial tribute episode to the fallen singer when it returned after a Spring hiatus.
  • Soon after, the season 3 episode of Glee titled Saturday Night Glee-ver took viewers back to the days of Disco by featuring songs from the movie soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever. This episode featured several songs by the band The Bee Gees (“Stayin’ Alive”, “How Deep Is Your Love”, “Night Fever”, “More Than a Woman”, and “You Should Be Dancing”) and aired on 17 April 2012.
  • Sometime around 14 April 2012 Bee Gees founder Robin Gibb was reported to have gone into a coma, this happened again just three days before the airing of Saturday Night Glee-ver. Then a little over a month later, today, Gibb is now dead as a result of his long struggle against cancer. Eerily coincidental, no?

Again, this post is not meant to make these deaths into a joke or to poke fun at them. I am merely pointing out the very odd coincidences and closeness of the deaths in relation to the dates of each episode airing, featuring music from said artists. I hope that we are all able to remember these fallen stars for their contributions to the music industry and not for any problems they may have dealt with throughout their lives. Glee is a good show, but it is quite odd how these deaths have occurred so close to episodes featuring specific music.

may they all rest in peace
